When 16 year old Valerie moves to California she meets Raphael, and soon the two become the best of friends. But then the most popular guy in school gets involved and it can’t end good, can it? She ends up in a love triangle and finds herself in a sticky situation. One will betray her, one will love her, who will she choose?
SHE PUSHES ME TO THE FLOOR, HARD.
I fall to the floor and hit my head on the brightly colored tiles. Ooh, probably got a concussion now.
A crowd gathers around us, murmuring.
“Who the h— do you think you are,” Bethany yells. “Talking to my boyfriend?”
“I think I’m someone who actually cares about him,” I say coldly.
Her mouth drops. Nobody’s ever talked back to her.
“Excuse me?” She stutters.
“Are you deaf or do you just not want to except the truth?” I snap.
God, I’m really asking for it.
She scoffs and bends down to face me, then smiles with fake cheerfulness.
She smacks me with her small, beautifully manicured nails, and my head snaps to the side.
Tears spring to my eyes, but I chew on my lip to keep them back. No way am I going to let her have the satisfaction of seeing me cry.
“HEY!”
Sasha turns her head, just slightly, and her eyes widen at whom the voice belongs to. I don’t even have to look at him, I know his voice all to well.
“Beckett! Babe,” She coos at him, getting up and walking to him.
I roll my eyes as I struggle to get up, my head spinning.
“What do you think you’re doing to Valerie?” Beckett snaps, ignoring her cooing.
“Oh, me?” She fakes surprise. “We were just messing around.”
He laughs bitterly.
“Yeah, right, Sasha. I know you by now. Leave her alone.”
Her smile turns into a scoff, and she growls - yes, growls - at him.
“Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”
“You well know that I’m saying what you think I’m saying.”
“And what do I think you’re saying?”
“I think you’re the devil in disguise,” He says. “And I’m breaking up with you. How’s that?”
Sasha blinks and turns beet red. I laugh out loud and she snaps her head over to look at me. I stop laughing as she moves to come towards me. Then Beckett does the unbelievable. He grabs her arms and puts them behind her back. He bends his head to whisper in her ear, “Touch her again... I dare you.”
He pushes her away from him and she falls to the floor, crying.
He comes to me and holds out his hand. I hesitate. He looks me in the eyes and says,”I’m not Sasha.”
I smile and take his hand, and he pulls me to my feet. I almost fall to the ground, dizzy, but he catches me by the arm and he pulls me to his chest. I feel him shaking.

We walk out of the school building, his arm around my waist to keep me from falling.
He walks me all the way home. He walks me up to the door, and smiles at me.
I smile back, as I turn to unlock the door to the house, his arm still around my waist.
I slowly unlock the door and carefully detach his arms from my waist.
“I have to go,” I say. “Thanks for rescuing me.”
He grins and responds, “Anytime.”
We stand there for what seems like hours before he finally says, “okay, then,” and walks away.
I watch him go, an empty feeling in my stomach.
This is going to be a long school year.

So, here’s the sitch, I just started 9th grade. I’ve known Bethany since 7th grade and we used to be great friends. But then she started getting into fashion, smoking, shoplifting, and all that fun stuff, leaving me behind.
And when I confronted her, she totally blew me off. And then she started hanging with the “cool kids” and started ignoring me. So I ignored her. And ever since then she has been being a total jerk to me. Now she’s the most wicked and popular girl in high school and I’m the total opposite.
Great life, right?

My name is Valerie and this is my story.
CHAPTER 1
Today is going to be a bad day, I can just tell. Not only is my best friend, Raphael, ignoring me, but he is dating my EX-best friend, Sasha.
Ever since Beckett broke up with Sasha, she’s been doing her best to try and make my life as miserable as possible, and she’s doing a good job, too.
As I’m coming out of my own thoughts, my phone rings and as I look at it I see the name “Raphael” lighting up my screen.
I turn red with anger and pick up my phone, ready to throw it at the wall, but at the last minute answer it.
“Hello,” I say, my voice clipped.
“Valerie,” he says, “It’s me, Raphael.”
“Yeah, I know who it is,” I snap. “Why are you calling me, of all people?”
“Look, I’m sorry,” he whispers, his tone sympathetic.
I roll my eyes. He should be sorry for unexpectedly ignoring me like he did.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” I can hear the smile in his voice.
My anger deflates.
“Why are you even dating her?” I ask, my eyes watering at the thought of it.
For the first time he hesitates, then says, “I can’t tell you.”
My moodiness comes back and I snap at him again, saying, “Fine. Don’t call me again.”
Just as I’m about to hang up, he blurts out, “I was trying to make you jealous!”
I put the phone back on my ear, shocked and speechless.
“W-What?”
