The Exchange
“Did you bring it?” He looked at me hopefully from behind the tree.
“Of course I did,” I answered, looking around, “Did you bring my little payment?”
“Yes, I have it here,” he looked down and patted his jacket pocket.
“Perfect,” I said as I came closer, hiding behind the tree. “Did anyone follow you here?”
“No, thank God,” he answered, still nervously looking around him. “There was a close one, but I lost him.”
“Good,” I said. “It was hard enough bringing up my part of the bargain.”
“What happens if we get caught?” he asked, looking fearful.
“Don’t,” I replied. “The people here are ruthless. If anyone tells, we’re done for.”
A new flash of fear crossed his eyes. He was right to be afraid.
“After this exchange, we act as if this never happened.” I pressed on. “Understand?”
He nodded his head. “Yes.”
“Let’s finish this up quickly,” I said.
We both fished out our goods, ready to complete our exchange.
As he gave me his dollar bill, I handed over my candy bar, and we both headed back to the playground.
Author Notes: I don't know if anyone else thinks this is funny (or at the very least - interesting), but I tried.
