The Magic of the Flame

By Dari Poulson

When I first saw the magic of the flame,

I did not understand,

If the flame is so healing,

How come it burns so much?

It keeps me warm at night,

And cooks all our food,

But it burns down homes, hopes, and families.

How can something so wonderful

Be so terrible and destructive?

But the destruction must have been needed,

Or why would it come at all?

Maybe it comes to teach us how to control it,

Or learn what more amazing things it can do.

The magic of the flame will show you amazing things,

If you are willing to also see

the tears and sadness of the flame.

Author Notes: I got burned when I was roasting marshmallows last summer and when I was rushing into the house to get the burn under cold water it gave me ideas for this poem. It's funny how a writer can get her ideas.
